Marriage Contract Without Consent of Guardians?

Hi I am 28 years old female and want to marry someone who has converted to Islam. My parents have not given consent due to his past history. I have had family members and an Imam to talk to my father but he still refuses for reasons I feel are not Islamic being he does not a degree and that make more money to him. The imam stated that he can not do the marriage because of our past relations. This is something that we did and are asking for forgiveness for our acts in the past. We want to get married and we have been trying to for the past year we want to this properly but we don't know where to go to do this Islamically without the consent of parents. I know according to Islam I have to have the consent of a guardian but I am not sure what else to do in this situation.
