Islamic Marriage and Islamic Dating

Assalamu Alikum, I am a sixteen year old woman and I have read this essay and understood why we women have to wear a jilbab but I would like to ask how do ISLAMIC marriages and ISLAMIC dating work? I have been to weddings and I see these grand parties and the women wearing a red saree or lehenga and what not but is this permitted in islam? I have been told not really these grand parties come from our culture and what not but I want actual proof about ISLAMIC marriages and how you would date someone whilst obeying the rules of ISLAM?
